Real ICMP "ping" isn't possible from a browser (only the operating system can send raw ICMP packets) — this instead sends 4 real HTTP requests to the site and times how long each takes to get a response, which is what actually matters for "is this website up." Browser CORS rules mean the response content can't be read, only whether it arrived — enough to tell reachable from unreachable. Runs entirely in your browser.
